Wayne DeMille Scholarship

The OPFFA, in recognition of Brother Wayne DeMille, awards scholarships of $1,000 each to deserving students of active OPFFA members who are continuing their formal education beyond secondary school.
 
Five (5) scholarships are awarded annually.

Wayne DeMille, throughout his career with the Ontario Professional Fire Fighters Association (OPFFA), as a member, a delegate, a consultant, a District Vice President, and Executive Secretary-Treasurer, demonstrated commitment to his community and our Association.

To honour his commitment to the OPFFA, the Wayne DeMille Scholarship Fund was established through convention action in 2006.

Five $1,000 scholarships are awarded annually to students who have demonstrated a commitment to their school, community, and home life while at the same time living up to the same “Code of Ethics” as the members of the Ontario Professional Fire Fighters Association.

Post-secondary education shall include, but not be limited to, university, college, or a trade or apprenticeship program.

Applicants are only eligible to receive this scholarship one time. 

The deadline to submit an application is June 1st.

Applications should include the following information;

Student/Applicant:  name, address, and phone number

OPFFA Member:  name, address, phone number, Local name and number, applicant’s relationship to the member.

Secondary Education:  school name, address, and phone number, school contact name, phone and email

Additional Documentation:

Copy of High School (Grade 12) transcript if enrolling in 1st year at a post-secondary institution/program.

If in 2nd year or beyond of post-secondary education, a copy of the previous year's transcript should be provided.

Proof of enrolment at a post-secondary institution/program and program of enrolment.

Letters of Reference:

Provide at least one letter of reference from a community contact, school official and/or employer

Community Activities:

A brief description of your school, community, and home life involvement, includes activities that demonstrate commitment to your broader community.

OPFFA - Code of Ethics:

In 200 words or less explain how you believe your success in a post-secondary education program will help you strive to exemplify the OPFFA’s “Code of Ethics”. 

Deadline for Receipt of Applications:

All applications must be received by the OPFFA office by the end of business (4:30pm) on June 1st.

As a firefighter and member of the Ontario Professional Fire Fighters Association, my duty is to serve humanity; to protect and preserve life and property; to maintain the highest levels of professional proficiency; to continually seek and facilitate innovation; and to share my expertise with all members who seek to improve their knowledge, skills and abilities.

I will never allow personal opinions, emotions, values, or ideals to deter me from my responsibilities as a firefighter.

I also acknowledge that my duties as a firefighter may place me in situations of personal risk, and, I will do everything in my power to minimize such risks.

I will at all times respect the property, rights, and chosen way of life of all people. I will abide by all the laws of my: community, province, and country.

I recognize the badge of my office as a symbol of public faith, and I accept it as a public trust, to be held so long as I am true to the ethics of the Fire and Emergency Service.

I will constantly strive to achieve the goals and objectives established by my service, dedicating myself to my chosen profession:

“THE PROTECTION AND PRESERVATION OF ALL LIFE AND PROPERTY”

As a member of the International Association of Fire Fighters and the Ontario Professional Fire Fighters Association, I accept this self-imposed and self-enforced obligation as my personal and professional responsibility.
