Ontario's Firefighters are calling on the provincial government to require municipalities to conduct a standard risk assessment every five years. This risk assessment would look at factors like demographics, geography, past fire loss and event history, and critical infrastructure, to determine the risk of fire across the community.
Why does this matter? Because it's only by properly understanding the risks that fire departments can plan their response to incidents, and properly distribute their resources to keep people safe.
Recent tragic incidents like the one in Oshawa* highlight the need for mandatory fire risk assessments.
We know the provincial government is listening, and they are considering a proposal that would require municipalities to conduct standard risk assessments every five years. Now is the time to speak up.
