All are available to OPFFA Locals for ongoing training. In October 2023, the OPFFA hosted its first Fire Ground Survival Train-the-Trainer Course in Toronto. The first course was offered in June (Kingston), the second in October (Toronto). The next course will be held in conjunction with the DeFazio Taylor Health & Safety Labour Education Seminar in October. An additional course is being planned for 2025/2026. The purpose of the IAFF Fire Ground Survival program is to ensure that training for Mayday prevention and Mayday operations are consistent between all firefighters, company officers, and chief officers. Firefighters must be trained to perform potentially life-saving actions if they become lost, disoriented, injured, low on air, or trapped. This course utilizes 6 IAFF Fire Ground Survival Master Instructors to provide 4 days of training (8:00-5:00) to 30 qualified firefighters who, upon successful completion, will receive the “Certified FGS Instructor” designation. The Train-the-Trainer course has three main purposes:
FGS Train-the-Trainer CTV News Coverage To register for the course, all participants must complete an application. Guidelines are available to assist you in your application. Click HERE to learn more about the course. The OPFFA's FGS trailer comes with 1-2 prop sets.
The Fire Rescue Prop was introduced in 2023 and only certified FGS Train-the-Trainer instructors who have participated in the OPFFA's courses are qualified to teach the FGS course using this prop. Additionally, OPFFA members can use the IAFF's trailer & props, which are shared with other IAFF 13th District members.
