In the late summer of 2016, the Ministry of Transportation began consultations on changes to D Licensing in Ontario. These ‘consultations’ were more opportunities to tell stakeholders of the upcoming license changes. It now appears that the changes to D-License renewal will be effective July 1st, 2018, where all license holders will be subject to a Class D knowledge and vison test at least every five years at the time of license renewal and more frequently for drivers over 45 years old. We have concerns over this, specifically with how your CBAs and employers address the matter. These changes may lead to increased employee costs, license interruptions, and possibly continued employment issues. There are 280,000 D licenses in Ontario; the logistics alone are staggering. We will keep you posted when we hear of implementation details or other information that arises.
