Where can I purchase a new smoke alarm?

  • Any Canadian hardware store, automotive retail, home improvement and department store will sell Smoke Alarms and Carbon Monoxide Alarms

Do I need to check my carbon monoxide detector?

  • Yes, you should check and maintain your carbon monoxide detector the same as you would check your smoke alarms. 

  • Test the alarm and install a new battery if it has one.
  • Sometimes they are 2 in 1 - smoke alarms and carbon monoxide alarms.

Where is the date of manufacture found?

  • It will be on a label, on the bottom or like this, on the side!

What if my smoke alarm looks really old?

  • You should check for a date of manufacture on the smoke alarm
  • If it is over 10 years old, or there is no sticker with the manufacture date, you should replace it with a new one!

How many smoke alarms should I have?

  • You should have one on every level of your home (near sleeping areas)
  • And you should have one in every bedroom.

What if I have a wired-in smoke alarm?

  • Test the alarm and see if it works, then
  • Change the back-up battery if it has one and
  • Check the manufacturers date and replace any smoke alarm that is over 10 years old.
